Deb’s Journey…

About Me

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 6:32 am

I grew up in central Iowa in the 70’s/80’s living in the same house until I graduated high school.  I’m a middle child with two brothers.  My parents were married 34 years before my dad passed away 10 years ago.

My husband Tom & I met “online” in Feb 1993 before there was a world wide web…we met while “chatting” on a bulletin board system out of the University of Iowa called ISCA…his nickname was “nimrod” and mine was originally “I love music” until a guy with the nickname “music” decided to stalk me…at which point Tom came up with my new nickname “ainur” which is from J. R. Tolkien’s the “Silmarillian” meaning musical angel.   Yeah, gallantry combined with flattery works…

We both moved to MN that summer.  We met in person at the MN Zoo in June…were engaged summer 1994 and married in May 1995.

In April 2000 we miscarried at 13 weeks - our midwife said “twins”…

In July 2001 God gave us a son,  we named him,  Ian Thomas.  The name “Ian” means God is gracious.  Ian was all boy - loved all rodents, trains, trucks, building things with Legos, running, climbing, and he had a wonderful imagination. On what would have been his Kindergarten graduation day he was diagnosed with a brain tumor in May 2008.  He battled bravely with “courage & kindness“.  He came to know & love Jesus that summer - was baptized that November and went to live forever with Jesus in February 2009 he lived 7 perfect years + 7  months.  He’s safe always, whole & well - indeed “God IS gracious!”  You can read more about Ian on:  Ian’s Caring Bridge Site

And so…Tom & I continue the Journey…this is a travel b”log” …

  1. Deb,
On a day when I am swamped with things to do I came across your blog and everything on my list really didn’t matter anymore. You write beautifully.
Thanks for the encouraging words you sent to our staff a few days ago.
Ian reminds me that God is gracious.
Somehow his life and impact lives on.
    Praise FM Director

  3. Deb,
I am a friend of Jason Gray’s. I saw your comment on the Rabbit Room and found your page. Our son Matt was good friends with Jason’s sons. I say “was” because our son died 15mo. ago as the result of a car accident on his way to work. There is something about wanting to connect with other bereaved parents, to know that you’re not alone. I have a blog as well and included the link. Thank you for sharing.
